"Akin's Annunciation"...in progress

This print is a response to Todd Akin's quoted about "legitimate rape" and his thought that a woman can just "shut that whole thing down" when being raped to prevent pregnancy.  What a disgusting excuse for a human being.

This print will follow the same formula as "Charmed Out Of Your Basket"

It begins with a four color lithograph printed from photo plates.  The transparencies were aligned to the iron oxide sketch on my stone using pin registration.  Printing the four color process first allows me to begin drawing while the first four colors of the print are drying rather than waiting until the drawing is complete to begin printing.
 time to draw...

The drawing is finished and the autographic ink is applied.  Ready for the etch...
Inked up in black on the stone...
The final layer is a grey the overlaps the stained glass imagery to pop it out from the white paper...6 colors total.

Mixing it up..."Charmed Out Of Your Basket"

Now that I have been working in lithography for a few months I'm going to start experimenting with the combination of photo litho and stone litho.  Registration nightmare here I come...This print begins with a four color process lithograph printed from photo plate...the transparencies were aligned to the iron oxide sketch on my stone using pin registration...this allowed me to work on the drawing will the first four layers of the print was drying rather than waiting for the drawing to be completed and the beginning printing.
 Draw, draw, draw
 More drawing...

 Sneaky snake...
The drawing is complete and ready for the first etch...
Inked up in black on the stone...now to see if my registration holds tight...if all goes well superman's face will be layered perfectly on top of jesus' face.
 It worked!
A final grey layer is printed over the stained glass imagery to pop it out from the white paper.  6 colors total.

And the litho marathon continues..."Heaven's Dogs"

I am now preparing for my thesis exhibition as well as an exhibition at the Southern Graphics Council International 2013 conference in Milwaukee.  I am continuing with this series dealing with Christianity in our contemporary political society.  Here are the in progress shots for my lithograph, "Heaven's Dogs"
I have been using this grey stone for a few months now and it has become my best friend.  I can etch my images with just about anything and it hold up...it behaves quite well after countless layers of drawing, auto graphic ink, tushe washes and sharpie flats.  I just finished up another drawing and it's ready to etch!
Inked up in black on the stone ready for the second etch.
Printed in "Trophies Brown" on Somerset Satin paper.
I've printed the first antique brown and I'm getting ready for the second color...another brown..and maybe some red.
This one is done..I considered using a lot more color...but when I pulled the red layer I was quite satisfied with the minimal amount of printing utilized to achieve this image.  Some times less really is more.

More Lithography..."Faith Healer"

These are the in progress photos for my lithograph titled "Faith Healer"... This print is a commentary on "Gay to straight" therapy and how disgusting I think it is.
 The drawing begins!
 getting there...
The drawing is complete and ready for the first etch...once again the autographic ink (the brown stuff) will fill in completely black.
The drawing is inked up in black on the stone and ready for the second etch.
Skipping ahead a few steps...The image is printed in "Trophies Brown" on Somerset Satin paper...two antique browns are used to fill in the stained glass image and a red for the background of the fire.
A orange to yellow blend roll fills in the flames and superman gets a tan!
A glowing orange light reflection is printed from a photo plate which was exposed to a stabillo pencil drawing on frosted mylar.
A toner wash adds smoke and ash behind the flames and the swastikas get a rd fill.
Done!!!!! 9 colors

Adventures in Lithography

So after a year of researching and creating mezzotint prints I have decided to get back into lithography. These prints are the beginning of a new series dealing with the role of Christianity in contemporary political America and the loss of the ideologies attached to Christianity.
After finding an amazing dark grey stone and graining, the first step is transferring my image mock-up to the stone.
It's been a while since I've drawn with litho crayons on a stone so I started with a small area to get back into the swing of things.

 Now I'm having fun!
I forgot how amazing it is to draw on a super smooth stone!!
The brown stuff you see is autographic ink...this will ink up completely black...hopefully.  I use this as a way to obtain solid blacks without using a thousand crayons.
The image rolled up in black on the stone.
The image printed in "Trophies Brown" on Somerset Satin paper.
 Now for color work...
Using sharpie flat methods,  I printed two antique browns.
 Then a skin tone.
The light blue highlight on the side of the female figures face also overlaps the skin to create a second skin tone and also fills in the eye.
Three reds are printed for the hair...a dark red and a light red to medium red blend.
 Brown jacket pink lips.
The yellow for the banana also overlaps the blue in the eye to make green.
The second brown in the figures jacket also becomes the shadow are of the banana.
A bright orange to dark orange fills in the fire.
A toner wash from a photo plate gives more dimension to the flames
Finished!  13 colors that actually create an 18 color print!
